Chinook Hospital Reduces Costs, Achieves Low-NOx Benefits

When Chinook Regional Hospital opened, it was operating three 500-hp Cleaver-Brooks steam boilers for its 270-bed facility. Thirty years later, the hospital built a five-story wing and needed to add boiler capacity. The hospital liked its Cleaver-Brooks boilers and wanted to stay with the brand. Hospital administration wanted high efficiency, low emissions firetube boilers with advanced controls. In addition, the administration wanted to change its boiler plant classification from a Class 2 to a Class 3 one to reduce its operating costs and environmental impact.

Challenge:

To change its plant classification from a Class 2 to a Class 3 one, the hospital's total heating surface had to be reduced below the 5000 kW rating. 

Solution:

The 400-hp Cleaver-Brooks CBEX firetube boilers with stack economizers met the hospital's criteria and offered a small footprint. The ability to provide the same capacity as a traditional firetube with a 15 - 20% reduction in footprint was key. 

When it came time to install the new boilers, adjustments had to be made to modify the location of the stack economizers. They were installed above the unit on a mezzanine walkway instead of coupled to the pressure vessel. Cleaver-Brooks designed a custom spool piece for each unit to ensure easy serviceabilty on the mezzanine.

Results:

Chinook Hospital estimates that its new boiler system helped the facility reduce fuel usage by 8%, electrical costs by 40% and meet 30 ppm NOx, so the building achieved Class 3 certification. Additional benefits of the new system include: noise reduction, smooth transition of boiler plant operation with the lead/lag control, and equal run time of all units without operator intervention.
